1938 19c Hayes

This 19c Hayes stamp is part of the 1938 Presidential Series (Scott #'s 803-834). Rutherford B. Hayes was elected President in the very highly disputed 1876 election which was eventually settled by a congressional commission through a backroom deal known as the Compromise of 1877. In addition, Hayes also holds a notable distinction as the only U.S. President who was wounded in Civil War action.
